Oyo Civil Service Salary Too Small, We Will Review It – MakindeBy InsideOyo on August 28, 2019@@insideoyo 0 COMMENTS
Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo, has advised Emeka Ihedioha, his successor, to emulate Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo state, who is “sustaining the good policies” of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking through Sam Onwuemeodo, his media aide, Okorocha said despite being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Makinde vowed to continue with the good policies of Abiola Ajimobi, his predecessor. Okorocha accused Ihedioha of constituting a 7-man panel to look into land allocation in the state from July 2006 to May 2019 as part of the governor’s witch-hunt. He said since Ihedioha assumed office, he had set up “more than 14 panels” whose assignments have been against him. “On Wednesday, August 14, 2019 Governor Emeka Ihedioha announced the Constitution of a 7-man Judicial Commission of Inquiry on lands’ allocations from June 2006 to May 2019, ” Onwuemeodo said in a statement. “Looking at the members of the panel, who are all card-carrying members of the PDP and their terms of reference, one would have no other option than to conclude that the governor as usual, has his target or mission, which is to continue his vendetta against the past APC government in the State and the man who headed it, Senator Rochas Okorocha. “Governor Ihedioha has set up more than fourteen Committees and Panels since he became governor and each of the Committees or Panels has one or two specific assignments to carry out and all against the APC government which Senator Okorocha had led. “For instance, the Prof. Jude Njoku’s education committee took no other action than to take over the PPP-oriented Eastern Palm University and also scrapped the six new Universities, four new Polytechnics and three new Colleges of Education built by Okorocha. “We would only ask Governor Ihedioha to borrow a leaf from his fellow PDP governor, who also succeeded an APC governor in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, who said that he wouldn’t Cancel APC Administration’s good policies”. “That is how a governor who means well should reason or act, because at the end of the day, the overall interest of the State and her people should remain the ultimate goal.” In June, Ihedioha had raised an eight-member panel to probe the government of Okorocha. He had urged Nigerians not to see the probe as a witch-hunt as alleged by Okorocha.
Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has declared his readiness to tackle poor remuneration in the state’s civil service, stating that poor remuneration packages could be counterproductive to anti-corruption initiatives.
The Governor, who was quoted as making the assertions while addressing the newly sworn-in Commissioners in the state reiterated his commitment towards finding a lasting solution to the issue of poor remuneration in the civil service.
The Governor stated that under his leadership, it would be business unusual, as he would do everything possible to ensure that workers in the state were not exposed to the temptations of corruption.
The Governor said: “We do have challenges and I can give you an example of the kind of issues that we are faced with. When I was on the podium being sworn-in, I announced that I was donating my salary to the pension board. I actually thought my salary was going to be like N3 or N4 million monthly but when I came in here, I discovered that my salary is only six hundred and fifty naira (N 650,000) monthly, which is less than two thousand dollars ($2,000). And then, I have a budget of over five hundred million dollars.
“How can somebody earning $24,000 a year preside over a five hundred million dollar budget? The temptation is just too high.
“When I was growing up, anytime I saw permanent secretaries and top civil servants, all around with their entourage, jeeps, Land cruisers, I thought they were making it big because I was driving Peugeot or Toyota Camry.
“But when I came in here, the salary of Permanent Secretaries is under N500,000 per month; in such an environment where you have contractors coming with big temptations. The expectation is just too great and high. But the good news is, we will find a solution to this. It’s going to business unusual in Oyo State, the Governor said.
He charged all the new Commissioners in the state to key into his vision and manifesto of accelerated development of Oyo State, adding that the administration would conduct business in an unusual manner that would change the narrative about governance in the state.
